While Waiting for More Information About Alan C. Davis, Back to Who’s Who on Those Boards

While Waiting for More Information About Alan C. Davis, Back to Who’s Who on Those Boards
Dangerous Dog Appeal Board
This board will review dangerous dog determinations which will be made by the Animal Services Director.  And still, no information about the search for this person and how it was going.   Members were named to the board.   All were appointed by the Onslow County Board of Commissioners and were assigned for a 3- year, staggered, term.  Their names are as follows:
1.     Michael Gallagher
2.     Lisa Meredith
3.     Larry Johnson
4.     Claudine M. Sisson
5.     Mary R. Thomas
Who are these people?  It was stated in the BOC meeting there were advertisements for openings on the internet and on cable tv.   Why not the newspaper?  Could there not have been some more ways to reach the general public?

1.   Michael Gallagher:   It seems he has been appointed by the BOC before, and one appointment was to the Minimum Housing Board of Appeals.
http://onslow.granicus.com/DocumentViewer.php?file=onslow_1e51c0bf1fc22bf1c0abc5b83cb837a7.pdf     He is the Fire Chief of the Sneads Ferry Volunteer Fire Department.  http://bb10.com/NC-Yellow-Pages/Sneads-Ferry/Onslow-County/Sneads-Ferry-Fire-House/9103273055/index.htm     So, he has been involved and in the “know” with Onslow County for a few years.

2.   Lisa Meredith:   She moved with her parents and has lived here about 11 years.  College educated.  She is the owner of  The Meredith Wolf Education and Conservation Den, a Jacksonville Wolf Conservation which she established in 2007.
http://www.encorepub.com/welcome/?p=10605  and   http://www.thewolfconservation.com/

3.   Larry Johnson:   He is a former Onslow County Sheriff’s deputy who now works for County Code Enforcement.
http://www.enctoday.com/news/johnson-64125-jdn-sheriff-brown.html     He is a long time resident of Onslow County and very well known in the county.

4.     Claudine M. Sisson:   She lives in Richlands. This is all that could be found out about her, for now.
http://pageserver.dexpages.com/dexbooks/EMBJSV11/data/svg/w01/page_148.htm

5.     Mary R. Thomas:   Little information.  Will be conducting more research into this person.

Onslow County Animal Services Advisory Committee.

6.     Dotty Ann Harding                                  Citizen At-Large
7.     Stephen Webb                                         Citizen At-Large

And who are these people and are they qualified to be “Objective” rather than influenced by the animal rights agenda which appears to be moving into this area?

1.     Dr. Robert M. Sheegog, Jr:    This man has been a veterinarian in Onslow County for decades.  He, also, has an office in Sneads Ferry.   http://topsailnccoc.weblinkconnect.com/CWT/External/wcpages/WCDirectory/Directory.aspx?CategoryID=8&Title=VETERINARIANS&AdKeyword=VETERINARIANS   This is a web link for Topsail Island Chamber of Commerce.  Why is this important?   Keep reading about the names on this list.   And, he is a member of the Jacksonville Rotary Club.  Why is this mentioned?  Keep reading.

2.     Susan B. Tuman:    President of Operation Topcat (caring for feral cats)  on Topsail Island, and she lives on North Topsail Island with a spouse, Daniel.  Susan has been on the planning board of NTSB and her spouse, is Mayor of NTSB.   Very familiar in the county.   (However, Operation Topcat’s home base is located in Sneads Ferry:

6.     Dotty Ann Harding.     Owner, Founder, President Onslow County Partners for Animal Welfare.  OC-PAW.
http://onslow-county-partners-for-animal-welfare-inc-sneads-ferry-n.assistance-from-nonprofits.aidpage.com/      Lives in Sneads Ferry.    http://www.oc-paw.com/    While she only spend half her year in NC, she has claimed Sneads Ferry, NC as her permanent residence.    http://www.all-natural-dog-treat.com/dotty-ann-harding-president-and-founder-of-onslow-county-partners-for-animal-welfare-inc-ocpaw.html      A member of the Sneads Ferry Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow (donated a $1,000.00 or more).    http://www.sneadsferryrotary.com/foundation.htm   OC-PAW is on Facebook:   http://www.facebook.com/pages/Onslow-County-Partners-for-Animal-Welfare/157557480940628   By the way,  something interesting in that she mentioned animal rights in an article written in the Wilmington newspaper:    http://www.starnewsonline.com/article/20110821/ARTICLES/110829961/1004?Title=OC-PAW-provides-vaccines-for-Animal-Control    She is a retired Operating Romm Nurse.

7.     Stephen Webb:   It appears he is the principal owner of All American Sign Shop, Inc. in Sneads Ferry, NC.
http://www.manta.com/g/mms9pxx/steve-webb    and president of Snoopys No. 1, Inc. in Sneads Ferry.   http://www.manta.com/g/mm2tpsh/steve-webb    and   http://www.secretary.state.nc.us/corporations/Corp.aspx?PitemId=5057369   Was one of the owners of Atlanta Station and Snoopy’s was started in Raleigh in 1978.    http://shrimpconnect.com/images/our-state-magazine.pdf

*****Interesting to note in this Animal Control Advisory Committee:    Look at the city most of them live in or around or who is associated with whom.   See a pattern?   There is a Six Degrees of Separation going on here.  In fact, it is less than the six degrees.   Top heavy with influential, higher income people from the Sneads Ferry/Topsail Island area or related to them by a degree.  NOBODY from the ends of the county.  NOBODY from the Hubert or Swansboro or Maysville/Belgrade area.  NOBODY from the Richlands area.   NO Hunters!   NO responsible breeders!   NO Exotic Animal Owners!  NOBODY who UNDERSTANDS hunting or breeding dogs, or cats or guinea pigs.  AND, ALL of these people were approved by the Onslow County Board of Commissioners.  It seems like those in the “know” knew about the committee and “Volunteered” to be on it.   Talk about problems in Onslow County.   This is how animal rights advances in an area, my friends.  H$U$ is famous for having meetings with those who are well moneyed and well known politically or who have connections, and this is what has happened here in Onslow County.

Onslow County Animal Services and No Searches Mentioned in BOC Meetings

WHO is the new Onslow County Animal Control Director?  Alan Davis.  AND?????
In my investigation, I discovered no mention of him in the Onslow County Board of Commissioners meeting minutes from January through September 2011.  No mention was made about animal control in 2011 until February 21,  2011.   People expressed concern over changes being made to the Animal Control and Services and herein lies the beginning of changes.  All good. I stress, all good, so far, but no mention of Alan Davis.   Officially, no Animal Services Director could be nominated until after this meeting since the changes in the animal control division were not approved until this February 21, 2011 meeting.  http://onslow.granicus.com/DocumentViewer.php?file=onslow_f3a0542221c5eaf2d7e7fb44c34a814f.pdf

The next step was made on March 07, 2011 with approval of the creation of the Onslow county Animal Services Advisory Board.
http://onslow.granicus.com/DocumentViewer.php?file=onslow_6a2f0ff5d3bd79c92a70e349aa69786c.pdf       It appears they , members of this board, will have their hands full, especially in the beginning.  So far, so good.
The third official step was entered into with the creation of a Dangerous Dog Appeals Board on April 04, 2011.   http://onslow.granicus.com/DocumentViewer.php?file=onslow_1b1e2f94a0fd0a603b6b195df9bf7787.pdf     Now this board will review dangerous dog determinations which will be made by the Animal Services Director.
4.     Claudine M. Sisson
5.     Mary R. Thomas
Now, I wonder where this was “advertised” on cable tv and on the internet?

In the May 02, 2011 meeting, the Onslow County Board of Commissioners  discussed the “VOLUNTEER”  Animal Cruelty Investigator.
http://onslow.granicus.com/DocumentViewer.php?file=onslow_75489ea5f3bd396fd98cc13ea445a26f.pdf      A volunteer could spell trouble, but it’s not a paying position, and something Onslow County can afford.  This individual will investigate allegations of animal cruelty and coordinate with the Animal Services Department.  It appears there was only ONE (1) applicant being considered for this position:  Thomas Michael LaBuda.   Now, his credentials are impressive, and he works for the Jones County Sheriff’s Department as its Evidence Specialist.  He has had extensive law enforcement training and has graduated from college.  Seems like a good person to choose, BUT
1     Were there any other applicants?
2.     How did they decide on this man if there were others who applied for this position?

The next meeting on May 16, 2011, dealt with Rabies Vaccinations and the need for it to be more effectively administered in Onslow County.   We used to have a vet, Dr. Robert Glass,  who, once a year, would give up a week of his time going to various centralized locations throughout Onslow County and offer low cost rabies vaccinations.  Kennel owners appreciate it.  Hunters appreciated it.  Regular everyday people appreciated it.  Dr. Glass died and no vet would volunteer to do what he had done.  Now, with this meeting, it shows that last August 11 staff members of the Animal Services Department participated in a Certified Rabies Vaccinator Educational training, and these individuals can give rabies vaccinations!  Yippee!   HOWEVER, these vaccines may only be given as a location designated by the Onslow County Health Director, and he determined the location would be at the Animal Services Department.   Well, it’s NOT centrally located , especially for those who live in the Swansboro and Belgrade and Maysville areas, but it is low costs and doesn’t come with a plethora of Animal Rights talk which has been allegedly given to hunters and kennels by another source.
http://onslow.granicus.com/DocumentViewer.php?file=onslow_2bb723081b72f1899b3066aa72146d47.pdf    This new program was to begin within the next 30 days.

Also, within this meeting was the appointment of seven (7) members to the Onslow County Animal Services Advisory Committee.
1.     Dr. Robert M. Sheegog, Jr.                                  Veterinarian
2.     Susan B. Tuman                                       Animal Welfare/Rescue
3.     Regina V. Carbonari                                Citizen At-Large
4.     James Marapoti                                       Citizen At-Large
5.     Carolyn Rouse                                          Citizen At-Large
6.     Dotty Ann Harding                                  Citizen At-Large
7.     Stephen Webb                                         Citizen At-Large

Question:   Where is Dotty’s permanent residence since she has a house at the beach and one in Pennsylvania?   Should not someone on a board such as this live full-time in Onslow County?  Now, I wonder about the other members of this committee, with the exception of Dr. Sheegog.  He’s lived in Onslow County for years.  In fact, he was one of the first vets to compete for business with Dr. Glass.  Oh, was this advertised on "cable tv" and the internet too?

To date, the last mention of the Onslow County Animal Control Division was on June 06, 2011.  This was for approval for an Animal Cruelty Investigator badge.
http://onslow.granicus.com/DocumentViewer.php?file=onslow_4d69f55c40f57b560b1e911872f8bfdc.pdf

So, in reading all the agendas and minutes for the 2011 year, thus far, there has been no mention of a search for a director of the newly developed Animal Control Division.  Since that department was not created until February 2011, how could no mention not be made, somewhere,  of a search for an appropriate director?  Now, I did not read the minutes after from September 19, 2011 forward.  Why?  Two reasons:   1.  The minutes weren’t available at the time of this blog entry, and 2. Alan Davis began his job on September 26, 2011.   The bottom line is that there was NO mention of a search for an Animal Services Director, and there is NO mention of Alan Davis.   What is going on in Onslow County?  Should we be concerned?

Animal Rights is Right here in Onslow County

So, Why did I Give You This Information?

Truth is a powerful weapon.
Reality is a powerful weapon.

The H$U$ was here in Onslow County on October 19, 2011.  As reported by The Daily News, H$U$ , along with a North Carolina based AR group, the NC Voters for Animal “Welfare” (NCVAW) and supporters for “Susie’s Law” came to Onslow County.   (Susie’s Law – an emotional name for  legislative bills  SB 254/HB 1690 which raises the penalty for anyone who maliciously kills or causes to be killed an animal by “intentional deprivation of necessary sustenance” .  Also, under GS 14-360(b) any person who would "maliciously torture, mutilate, maim, cruelly beat, disfigure, poison, or kill, or cause or procure to be tortured, mutilated, maimed, cruelly beaten, disfigured, poisoned, or killed, any animal" is now guilty of a Class H felony instead of the current Class I felony. This bills was signed into effect by Governor Perdue in 2010. )  Where did they go?  Where did they meet?  They came to Sneads Ferry and spoke at the North Shore Country Club.   By the way, this is another ploy of the H$U$.  Hobnob with those who have above average incomes. Most with high incomes are college graduates and Most individuals in these groups do not know anything about smaller town country living.  Big city dwellers hear about hunting and are abhorred by the thought of killing “bugs bunny” or “bambi.”   Most are shocked by the smells of commercial fishing boats.  They want to protect an animal, which is commendable, but the way this meeting was orchestrated raises concerns about the end results.  Questions???  Why was this meeting not set in a more central location?  Why was this meeting not publicized more to the general public?   An article in the local newspaper on the day of the event is not enough time for the average individual to make plans to attend such a meeting regardless if it is in a central location or not.

So, who was the instigator?  A woman by the name of Dotty Ann Harding, and according to the newspaper, she is the president and founder of Onslow County Partners for Animal “Welfare”.   Though how one can use the word welfare when H$U$ is involved is beyond me.   She is not from this area.  She is from Chester County, PA, and they have a house there, in West Chester, as well as here in Sneads Ferry.  A bio states she “has become quite active with animal rescue in the Southern states, especially North Carolina and wants to eventually encourage the community to establish a No Kill approach.”   (More about the fallacies of No Kill later.)   AND, she appears to really like the H$U$ or she doesn’t comprend the methodologies of this organization.  However,   just go to the OC-PAW website and see for yourself.   http://www.oc-paw.com/    Like the H$U$, which states, publicity they are “for” responsible breeders, when they really aren’t for ANY breeding at all, it appears that Dotty and her organization is against breeders, too.   This is on the OC-PAW website:    http://www.oc-paw.com/LETTER-FROM-A-SHELTER-MANAGER.html    There are a lot of mistaken beliefs in this letter and show an ignorance that AR groups and individuals build upon to get people to assist them in passing laws which will end animal usage as we know it.   She also appears to like NCVAW, and so, I would be remiss in not conjecturing that she appears to be an Animal Rights Activist or a budding one.  Additionally, could it be that other coordinators on the staff might be going to the dark side of animal rights, too?   Don’t know.  Since Dotty was the person the paper focused on, and her organization, she was worth mentioning in this blog.   I don’t know Dotty personally, but I surmise she is a very caring individual, but I fear for Onslow County because of the choices for this Seminar for Animals.

Dotty is also a member of the newly formed Onslow County Animal Services Department Advisory Committee.   Oh boy!  H$U$.  NCVAW.  I smell an AR invasion and it’s not going to be pretty.  I was in the Onslow County Animal Control Advisory charged with forming that group.  I was the chairperson of the education division until those damned issues cropped up and I couldn’t stay involved in the group.  I definitely know what it cost Onslow County to have an animal welfare person have to dropped out and let the uninformed about AR groups stay in the race.  Members were looking at educational materials from H$U$ and the A$PCA for school children.  I couldn’t sway them logically because those issues took me out of commission.   Crap!

So, don’t take this the wrong way.  I am pro rescue and pro adopting, even when the adoption fees are more than a dog from a responsible breeder.  If that is what someone wants to do, then that person should have the option to rescue and/or adopt.  I have adopted and have rescued many dogs.  I have seen dogs died and have had to euthanize them.  I am an occasional breeder and like all responsible breeders, I have taken back more than one dog when, for whatever reason, the owners couldn’t keep the dog any longer.   My dogs are health tested and UTD (up-to-date) with vaccinations.   I know the histories of all my dogs and the genetics.  And for God Sakes, it is a LIE to think mixed breeds are healthier than purebreds.  Are you crazy?   Think about it.   With a purebred,  especially one from a responsible breeder, you will see the parents, meet the breeder, know the breed history, know what to expect.  You CANNOT say any of that with a mixed breed.

But I have digressed and  now, Back to the newspaper article…
People would be able to meet the OC Advisory Committee and hear about plans for Onslow County at this first Seminar for Animals.  Hey!  What about those of us who are middle class, who don’t get a newspaper and have little to no knowledge about this committee and what surprises are in store for the people of Onslow County?   It appears the deck may be stacked against the middle and lower classes. This is another way the AR groups work.  The educated, thanks to AR propaganda, “help” the common masses see problems and issues when there aren’t any or actually few and want to pass more restrictive laws when there are other ways to solve them besides legislate and let those who can ill afford it pay for the changes.    Hmmmmm.    It does state some positive things which have begun at the animal shelter such as vaccinations, rabies clinics and a volunteer program.  (There used to be a volunteer program at the shelter some years ago. )   However, they want to focus on education, spaying and neutering and reducing euthanasia.   Good focuses, unless it becomes an AR bent with mandatory differential licensing (different licensing fees for altered and non-altered beasts) or mandatory spaying and neutering of more than just adoptable shelter dogs (everyone must alter their pets or face court and fees and possible jail) or mandatory education in school based on an AR curriculum.  Most parents wouldn’t understand the consequences of this, but think of it this way: your child comes home and begins telling you what you are doing wrong with your pets or decides to refuse to eat meat because of the little chickens that were killed and how they must have been tortured and killed in a horrid fashion.  Or worse, the child reports you to animal control because you don’t take care of your pet the AR way. You think I am kidding?  This has happened in other cities and in other states.
Now, surprise, a new Animal Control director was hired on September 26 and his name is Alan Davis.  He came from the Fulton County Animal Services in Atlanta, GA where he was director.  Prior to that, he was director of the Broward County Animal Services in Florida.   What in the world does a man with big city experiences want with a smaller burg like Onslow County?

Dateline: Onslow County, North Carolina

Dateline:   Onslow County, North Carolina
(While this may focus on Onslow County, this blog will emcompass North Carolina and some federal and international problems with the invasion.)

The “Animal Rights” brigade has invaded and people don’t realize what is going on…….
Some Background Info:
While I wasn’t born here in Onslow County, or even in N.C., I grew up here as a military brat.  Went to school and graduated from high school here.  Made friends and knew my first love here.   Went to colleges and joined the USN and came back for visits.  In 1993 I returned to live here again.  Onslow County, you might say, is in my blood.  I grew up knowing how to shoot a rifle, hunt, which leaves not to touch and how to tell the differences between a poisonous and non-poisonous snake.  I grew up learning how to fish.  I grew up recognizing that farmers and commercial fishermen are as needed and as much a part of the community and our history as Camp LeJeune and before the military bases.  I grew up understanding dogs are dogs, cats are cats, horses are horses and critters like these do NOT have the same rights as a human being.  I grew up understanding humans are omnivores.   Some choose to be vegetarians while a few others choose a vegan “lifestyle”.  However, just don’t force your beliefs on me.
Some Current Info:
I have issues.   Hell, we ALL have issues.  I have medical issues.  For one reason or another they prevent me from doing many things.  One of my loves is dog showing.  While I can’t go to one anymore and show a dog myself, I have had dogs shown to their championships.  Two champion show dogs that I owned, unfortunately, died within this past year.  I will buy another potential show dog again and I will have it shown to its championship.  NOTICE:   I said “BUY”.  Not adopt.  That is my prerogative  and my right.  I choose to buy a puppy from a reputable breeder.  There is nothing wrong with adopting a pet or rescuing a dog.  I have rescued dogs and adopted dogs, but I choose to buy a puppy that has a health history I know, understand, can see the genetics from the sire and dame and comprehend what goes along with my choice in breed of dog.
I am a member of the local all-breed kennel club which is recognized by the AKC (American Kennel Club).  Jacksonville NC Kennel Club (JNCKC).   Due to those previously mentioned issues, I haven’t made it to a meeting in a year.  I am a member of the Central Carolina Dachshund Club (CCDC), the National Miniature Dachshund Club (NMDC) and the Dachshund Club of America (DCA).  Now, can you tell which breed of dog I prefer??
I was the legislative person for the JNCKC for a number of years.  Recently, I was the co-chair of the Legislative Committee for the DCA until September 2011 when those damnable issues made it very difficult for me to focus and keep abreast of legislative situations for the DCA.  So, I needed to resign my position.  It was a very difficult decision but needed to assist in my health.  Resting. Recouping.  Regaining a foothold within these issues.  And just as I am continuing to regroup, all Hell breaks loose right here in Onslow County.
Education 101:  The Differences between Animal Rights vs. Animal Welfare.
There is a difference and many don’t understand the danger of the differences until it smacks them in the jaw with a left hook.  How many care about the differences?  Oh, you hunters will….   You who breed a couple of litters of dogs or cats or guinea pigs will….  You pig farmers and ranchers and 4-H’ers will and you people who want to buy a specific breed of dog as a puppy and know its history will……  and hopefully by then, it won’t be too late.
Melodramatic?   Not at all.  Let’s look at the differences between animal rights and animal welfare.
Animal Welfare means you care about animals.  You care about their treatment.  You care they are used in a respectful and safe manner.  You understand we, as humans, have a responsibility to care for animals.   Animal welfare means ensuring that animals are humanely treated regardless of how we use them.  Animal welfare means being responsible for animals we use whether it is for food, education, research or kept in zoos and especially being responsible for our pets in our home.

To reiterate:    As animal welfare advocates. . .

1.   We seek to improve the treatment and well-being of animals.
2.   We support the humane treatment of animals that ensures comfort and freedom from unnecessary pain and suffering.
3.   We believe we have the right to "own" animals -- they are our property.  We are not pet guardians.
4.   We believe animal owners should provide loving care for the lifetime of their animals.
Animal Rights is a philosophy.   While animal rights individuals and groups talk about humane treatment of animals, they go further than that.  They believe animals are NOT ours to use as we please or as needed.  The most radical of them ascribe to a vegan lifestyle of absolutely no animals or animal by-products usage.   Animal rights is a belief that no species on earth is better than another and therefore, humans have no right to “enslave, dominate, use, breed or eat non-human species”.   Don’t believe it?  There is a leading animal rights professor at NCSU.  Yes, what was originally thought of as an agricultural college years ago has an AR professor.   Tom Regan is a Professor of Philosophy at NCSU and here is a short bio on him as well as others who fostered the AR movement in its earliest stages:   http://www.animal-rights.com/arpage.htm

To reiterate:    As animal rights activists. . .

1.   They seek to end the use and ownership of animals, including the keeping of pets. 2.   They believe that any use of an animal is exploitation so, not only must we stop using animals for food and clothing, but pet ownership must be outlawed as well.
3.   They want to obtain legal rights for animals as they believe that animals and humans are equal.

4.   They use false and unsubstantiated allegations of animal abuse to raise funds, attract media attention and bring supporters into the movement. (The Inhumane Crusade, Daniel T. Oliver:
http://www.amazon.com/Animal-Rights-Inhumane-Crusade-Organization/dp/0936783230  )
No Exam!  The “Humane” Society of the U.S.  (H$U$)
The H$U$ is by far the wealthiest Animal Rights organization in the USA.  In fact, it is the wealthiest Animal Rights organization in the world.   So, you would think with that kind of money it would do a lot to help critters.  You would be wrong.  I choose to speak of this organization first because they have invaded Onslow County and are trying to “sway” the uninformed to their way of thinking.  AR groups, not just the H$U$, and individual AR ”Advocates” do this by a modality of tactics like emotional diatribes and just right/just timed “busts” on breeders and alleged dog fights and then riding in to the “rescue.”   (By the way, something to consider:  in all these busts the alleged perpetrator had been under investigation for some time.  Knowing animals are suffering, why are the various local law enforcement agencies …..  WAITING to go into the environment and help the animals??)   They do this by advertising with those sad faced little TV ads and by coming into an area and talking about the problems with animals in that area.  Pet Overpopulation?  Too many dog breeders?  To many chicken or pig farmers with farms they believe are substandard?   People are eager to help needy critters.  They come in with statically one-sided data that they  CANNOT substantiate.   Uninformed people believe them.   They come in with the smoothest talking people that have Never run for a political office.
With the uninformed hooked, the requests for money begin.  The requests to report neighbors and family and friends who they believe might be mistreating animals, according to the AR “bible” begins.  Politicians begin thinking about changing laws that have been working because the AR group says the law really isn’t working.  People begin pushing lawmakers for changes for the “betterment” of the animals, NO matter the costs to humans.  The AR groups continue to push for more changes and more advancements of their beliefs.   NO matter the costs to humans.  The AR group doesn’t have to worry about paying for the costs.  It just keeps raking in the money.
There you have it in a nutshell:  H$U$.
The SEVEN (7) Things You Didn’t Know About the H$U$  (http://www.consumerfreedom.com/article_detail.cfm/a/184-7-things-you-didnt-know-about-hsus )
1.   The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is a “humane society” in name only. It isn’t affiliated with any hands-on “humane society” organizations, and it doesn’t operate a single pet shelter or pet adoption facility anywhere. During 2008, HSUS contributed barely $450,000— less than one-half of one percent of its budget—in grants to dog and cat shelters. By comparison, that same year it gave $2.25 million to a political campaign committee behind an anti-meat ballot initiative in California, and put $2.5 million into HSUS’s executive pension plan. HSUS is the wealthiest animal-rights lobbying organization on earth. It agitates for the same goals as PETA and other radical groups, but uses fewer naked interns.
2.   Beginning on the day of NFL quarterback Michael Vick’s 2007 dogfighting indictment, HSUS raised money online with the false promise that it would “care for the dogs seized in the Michael Vick case.” The New York Times later reported that HSUS wasn’t caring for Vick’s dogs at all. And HSUS President Wayne Pacelle told the Times that his group urged government officials to “put down” (that is, kill) the dogs rather than adopt them out to suitable homes. HSUS later quietly altered its Internet fundraising pitch. Vick now gives HSUS “sponsored” speeches. And most of his dogs have been rehabilitated—WITHOUT any help from HSUS.
3.   HSUS’s senior management includes a former spokesman for the Animal Liberation Front (ALF), a criminal group designated as “terrorists” by the FBI. HSUS president Wayne Pacelle hired John “J.P.” Goodwin in 1997, the same year Goodwin described himself as “spokesperson for the ALF” while he fielded media calls in the wake of an ALF arson attack at a California veal processing plant. In 1997, when asked by reporters for a reaction to an ALF arson fire at a farmer’s feed co-op in Utah (which nearly killed a family sleeping on the premises), Goodwin replied, “We’re ecstatic.” That same year, Goodwin was arrested at a UC Davis protest celebrating the 10-year anniversary of an ALF arson at the university that caused $5 million in damage.
4.   A 2008 Los Angeles Times investigation found that HSUS receives less than 12 percent of the money raised on its behalf by California telemarketers. Professional fundraisers keep the rest. If you exclude two campaigns run for HSUS by the “Builda-Bear Workshop” retail chain—which consisted of the sale of surplus stuffed animals (not really “fundraising”)—HSUS’s yield shrinks to just three percent. This is typical. In 2004, HSUS ran a telemarketing campaign in Connecticut with fundraisers who promised a return of “zero percent” of the proceeds. The campaign raised over $1.4 million. Not only did none of that money go to HSUS, but the group paid $175,000 for the telemarketing work. Similar filings exist in Massachusetts, New York, and other states. In 2008 HSUS collected more than $86 million in contributions, but spent more than $24 million on fundraising.
5.   HSUS’s heavily promoted U.S. “boycott” of Canadian seafood—announced in 2005 as a protest against Canada’s annual seal hunt—is a phony exercise in media manipulation. A 2006 investigation found that 78 percent of the restaurants and seafood distributors described by HSUS as “boycotters” weren’t participating at all. Nearly two-thirds of them told surveyors they were completely unaware HSUS was using their names in connection with an international boycott campaign. Canada’s federal government is on record about this deception, saying: “Some animal rights groups have been misleading the public for years … it’s no surprise at all that the richest of them would mislead the public with a phony seafood boycott.” A documentary director also caught an HSUS film crew abusing a dying seal while they shot a 2007 fundraising video on the ice floes of Atlantic Canada.
6.   HSUS raised $34 million in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, supposedly to help reunite lost pets with their owners. But comparatively little of that money was spent for its intended purpose. Louisiana’s Attorney General shuttered his 18-month-long investigation into where most of these millions went, shortly after HSUS announced its plan to contribute $600,000 toward the construction of an animal shelter on the grounds of a state prison. In 2009, Atlanta ABC affiliate WSB-TV reported that public disclosures of the disposition of the $34 million in Katrina-related donations added up to less than $7 million.
7.   After gathering undercover video footage of improper animal handling at a Chino, CA slaughterhouse during November of 2007, HSUS sat on its video evidence for three months, even refusing to share it with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. HSUS’s Dr. Michael Greger may have perjured himself before Congress, testifying that the San Bernardino County (CA) District Attorney’s office asked the group “to hold on to the information while they completed their investigation.” The District Attorney’s office quickly denied that account, declaring that HSUS refused to make its undercover spy available to investigators if the USDA were present. Ultimately, HSUS chose to release its video footage at a politically opportune time, as it prepared to launch a livestock-related ballot campaign in California. Meanwhile, meat from the slaughterhouse continued to flow into the U.S. food supply for months.
Money.  Money where is the H$U$ money?
According to HumaneWatch.com:   We studied HSUS’s IRS Form 990 for 2010, and found that just two-fifths of one percent (0.42%) of HSUS’s $126 million budget was spent on grants to support pet sheltering. This “Humane Society” spent a whopping $47 million on fundraising—almost 90 times what it spent on these shelter grants. HSUS also stuffed $32 million away in hedge funds and put over $2.5 million in its executive pension plan.
What’s another HSUS priority? Supporting lobbyists. We found that HSUS spent 86 times more on its Ohio political front group attacking farming in 2009 than it did on Ohio pet shelters. In Missouri, HSUS spent 32 times more on its political front group in 2010 than it did on shelter-support in that state.

The Humane Society of the United States would like Americans to believe it provides significant monetary support to local hands-on shelters, but their financial records tell an inconvenient truth. As local shelters struggle to keep their doors open, HSUS is raising millions of dollars a month from unwitting donors to bankroll an animal rights agenda and fund a huge staff of lawyers and lobbyists, a bloated executive pension plan, and exorbitant fundraising expenses. Meanwhile, HSUS doesn't run a single shelter for the abandoned dogs and cats that are so plentiful in its ads.
